Communities

I believe that if we invested in more intentional spaces for slower thinking and connecting as individuals, we would all be a little happier.

I am constantly tinkering with learning as a social practice. Here are the professional communities that I'm part of.

Design Research Tokyo

I co-founded Design Research Tokyo in November 2018 to produce events to accelerate knowledge exchange within our nascent practitioner community.

DRT is an English-friendly community. Don't worry if you're not fluent in Japanese.

We welcome offers for venues in central Tokyo, esp. if you'll manage the catering expenses, too. In exchange, we can provide excellent reach to the design/research scene.

Please shoot me an e-mail. You can suggest yourself, too.

Are you a researcher visiting Tokyo?
Get in touch - we love meeting new people. Let's coordinate a coffee or maybe even a meetup.

Women Talk Design

Women Talk Design elevates women and gender non-binary speakers, empowers event organizers with resources to engage more diverse speakers, and offers training and support for new speakers.

As an instructor, I organize workshops with community leaders around the world to support designers who wish to connect to bigger audiences.

Design Your Talk Topic is a two-hour workshop that explores how to get started with public speaking.

You'll get practice identifying:
- Your personal ‘why’
- Your audience
- What topics you can speak about
- Walk away with ideas you can start building into a talk!

Past events In December 2018 at Ride the Lightning in Tokyo
In January 2019 at GovTech in Singapore with Sam Yuen
In June 2019 in Paris with the Hexagon UX community

Interested in hosting this workshop for your community? Get in touch.

ResearchOps Community

Between Feb 2019 - Sep 2021, I was on the board of directors for the ResearchOps community, a vibrant online group of 15,000 members concerned with knowledge work at scale. I focused on designing structures for different layers of engagement, while leading the Research Skills Framework project with Dave Hora.

What is ResearchOps?
In June 2018, I co-organized the Tokyo edition of the global workshop series on operationalizing research. Slides available [Japanese]. Our half-day, English-Japanese bilingual workshop with 30 participants generated so much energy, we turned it into Design Research Tokyo a few month later.

ResearchOps March Town Hall
In March 2019, I organized an online event with fellow project members to introduce an upcoming series of global workshop about researcher skills. Recording available.

Researcher Skills and Career workshops
In March 2019, an invite-only trial workshop in Paris.
In May 2019, a public version in Paris with Marine Dias.
In August 2019, the Tokyo version for Design Research Tokyo.

IxDA Interaction 20
In February 2020 in Milan, I gave a talk about the journey of the Researcher Skills Framework project with Dave Hora. Slides available.
